Spring quarter... hard to believe. One week under my belt and it seems like summer is just around the corner. Spring break was cool - Skiing in British Columbia, then chillin in Detroit. I spend a few hours downtown looking a real estate investment opportunities. on Saturday I rode my bike to Chicago with my friend Tim, 30 miles round trip. Wouldn't it be cool if Detroit were half as cool as Chicago? Wouldn't it be cool to refurb a historic building and try to contribute to Detroit's recovery?

Started teaching a small group leadership class with the Christian MBA fellowship. That will be a great opportunity to strengthen the core and equip leaders for a big launch in the fall. Exciting... trying to figure out how to engage with the broader MBA community.

In other news... the world is waiting for the sesquentennial strong bad e-mail...

I've said enough. I'm just sitting here in Panera trying to act cool with my laptop and avoid doing any real work by rattling on xanga. Sorry. I said I was bad at this.

Summer in the Motor City

The update:

Thanks for your prayers and encouragement as I've been experiencing this Chicagoland ride called, "mba school"!

In case you were wondering about the rumors of my return to the motor city this summer.... I'd like to provide an update, straight from the source, from the home office in Evanston, IL.

A little quiz first...

Q: What does the Motor City have that you can't find in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, or even Davenport Iowa?

A: Northridge Church, Superhood, Sunday Night Soccer n' Hang, and a whole bunch of cool people who I haven't seen enough in 9 months!!!

So, I've accepted a summer internship offer from PRTM in Southfield, MI. (Of course there a few good professional reasons too.) In case you didn't notice, I'm pretty pumped about being back in Detroit and plugging back in.

Have a great weekend!

Chris Reck

Summer Directions

Wow, I've been missing xanga for a month! How did you millions of readers contain yourselves while I was gone?

Sorry, really, I've been busy. Recruiting for summer internships kicked my butt. What a process! Interviewing is a false reality designed to keep you out. I'm still working on bringing in the offers so that I can decide where I'll be this summer, and hopefully after school. Pray that I am able to see and follow where God leads!

Here is a brief recap of the cool things I did while I was away...

Traveled to the quad cities for interviews

Gave Dave Arnold the campus tour

Flew up the lake MI coast past Chicago and Evanston in a 4 seater Cessna with 2 of my B-school buds. (flew over Navy Pier at an altitude lower than the Sears Tower)

Participated in a S.A.D. (singles awareness day) party with some cool friends at which time we indulged in various sport such as playing at a playground, watching Napolean Dymanite, and driving through a Mcdonalds drive thru backwards.

Dropped $900 on a new water heater for Reck-Lansing

Survived Midterms

Spent a few hours with my parents in Evanston

Put on a suit way too many times for way too many interviews

Toured a Harley Davidson Plant in Wauwatosa, WI

And a few things I am looking forward to...

Being in Detroit to attend Northridge this Wednesday night and interviews on Thursday.

Hosting Jeff Schram, Paul Brady, Shane Sevo, Chris Smith, and Roland Bueno for a Chicago style weekend on the 24-26th.

Congrats to Kyle and Keri on getting the keys to their first house this week!

Normal

I wanted to bring you in a on a discussion that began in small group Tuesday and continued on later with a friend. It started with asking why it is so hard to make personal time to spend with God? One answer is that busyness is normal for students. It is normal to do homework all day Sunday. It is normal to attend every last presentation or meeting that might expand our mind. After all, our time at school is short so it is normal to make the most of it… Does any of this sound normal?

Did I just say normal 6 times in the last 6 sentences? I did it intentionally, because acting normal and accepting the norms of our surroundings is a big part of student life. For example… How many of you feel pressure to pursue a particular career or organization because it is normally accepted as the most excellent thing to do? I know I have, I need to be a consultant and work at McKinsey. Or I need to work at Proctor and Gamble or Microsoft. Or I need to get my Phd by the time I am 25. All great goals of course, but potentially not the best for you? Why? Because you’re not normal… and neither am I.

What this leads me to is recognizing once again, that everybody is normal until you get to know them. We all act normal. We know we’re not, but since everyone else looks normal, we have an image to uphold and we jump in the game. And a result is that we miss opportunities to do what we know is best so that we can chase what others think is best. For example taking 20 minutes in the middle of our day to spend quality time with God. But another result is that we develop inauthentic relationships.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have decided to choose authenticity over pretending to be normal for a couple reasons.

1) Wearing a mask robs me of God’s power to be a functioning member of Christ’s body.

Ephesians 4:25

25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

We were made for authentic Christian community.

Eph 4: 12-15

12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up

13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.

2) Wearing a mask robs me of God’s power to influence non believers

Matthew 5:13-14

13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

If school is a place where the pressures of normalcy are stronger, then the potential results of being authentic, are much greater. I (we all) need to learn how to do that.

Generation aXis

Ok, It's been a week, time for an update...

What a busy week! I love winter quarter because you get so much done (just like when Cedarville was on the 3 quarter system). 10 weeks of pounding it and then a well deserved spring break with 5 more classes under your belt.

Another element of busy-ness this year is that I will conduct 2 job searches and choose 2 jobs in 2006. By March 1 I will know what I am doing this summer, and before the end of December I will probably have accepted a full time offer starting June 2007. It's fun, the hardest part is wading through all of the options and directions to discern where God wants to use me.

Finally, I'm getting plugged into aXis at Willow Creek which is reminiscent of the glory days of oXygen at NRC. Lots of opportunity to connect with some peops like myself from all over Chicago who are interested in knowing God better.

All for now... Chris Reck

Happy New Year

Hello there,

I couldn't help myself in trying this out. I have enough friends posting Blogs that I feel that I'm not keeping up with the Jones's. The irony is that I am keeping up (to date) with them but they can't keep up (to date) with me because I'm terrible at journaling. However, right now all of the ingredients are right: It is late, I need a break from homework, and if Redshadowing can do it-so can I. Maintaining current updates is a more aggressive challenge. I make no promises.

Happy New Year! I just got back from a great Christmas break. I love being a student again. Can't beat 28 days of Christmas vacation. 6 days of skiing in Steamboat Colorado with 650 of my classmates was quite a party, especially when ToneLOC and Digital underground showed up at apres ski partys sponsored by MBA employment solicitors. The 5th annual Superhood Christmas party was a great time of catching up with friends, caroling, and playing poker and Halo until 3 am. I spent 10 days with family and friends at the parents place in snowy White Lake. Then into the great white north for a 3rd new years ski extravaganza with my favorite homeys. Finally, on the return to Chicago, I managed to stop in Grand Rapids to meet Eva, the newest addition to the Tim and Jori Phillips family.

I hope 2006 is off to a great start for you. God Bless!
